Lung resection is the removal of part or all of the lung
The removal is often necessary because of lung disease or lung cancer. If you are told you need to have lung resectioning surgery there are several things which are helpful to know.
There are two sides to your lung, the left side and the right side. The left side is comprised of two anatomical parts referred to as lobes, while the right side consists of three lobes.
Lobectomy
When lung cancer is found, a common procedure to prevent the spreading of the cancer, is the removal of one or more of these lobes.
This procedure is called a lobectomy. In some cases where the tumor is discovered early, it can sometimes provide a cure for lung cancer. In cases where the tumor is very small or cancer is suspected but has not been identified, a wedge resection or segmentectomy can be performed. This procedure allows for a portion of the lung that is smaller than a full lobe, to be removed. This area would include the suspected cancerous tissue as well as a small portion of the healthy tissue found around the area in question.
Pneumonectomy
In some cases depending on the size and location of a tumor, the removal of the entire lung may be required. This procedure is know as a Pneumonectomy. Although your body was intended to function with two lungs, and the removal one lung does cause a significant loss of lung function, many individuals live quite well with only one lung.
Before any lung resectioning procedure..
All lung resectioning procedures are performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the procedure. You will be given instructions by Ocala Lung prior to any lung resectioning procedure. It is important that you follow the instructions provided to you as you prepare for and recover from a lung resection procedure.
